Recent empirical studies have unveiled an increasing annual percentage for about 30% of life threatening incidents due to hyper- and hypothermia when leaving children alone in the cars. Many parents are unaware that children are three to five times more susceptible to temperature variation than adults and hence leaving them in the car even for few minutes could end up with a tragic incident. Since our childrens health comes as first priority, and due to the lack of solutions in the market, my partner and I have designed and implemented an effective and low cost wireless warning system which proactively notifies the parents on any possible incident and optionally resolves the situation prior to their arrival.
Our system consists of two modules: a fixed car module, and a parent module which is carried by the parents. The car module consists of four units; motion detection unit to detect the presence of a child inside the car, temperature measurement unit and a display to show the temperature inside the car, a transceiver unit that sends a warning signal to the parent module, and a control unit to control and synchronize the operations of all these units. The parent module consists of three units: a transceiver unit which reacts to a warning signal from the transmitting circuit in the car module, alarming unit to warn the parents that there is a situation in the car, and a control unit to organize and synchronize the operations of all its units.
In our design, we consider two cases depending on whether the cars switch state (i.e., on or off). On the first hand, when the car is in the OFF state, the car module will start by detecting if there is a child inside the car, and if so, the temperature measurement module will be activated. If the measured temperature is out of the predefined range (e.g., 12-30 Celsius), the transmitting circuit sends an alarming signal to the parents module for a given period of time (e.g., 3 minutes). If the parent does not come back to the car within this period, a reactive procedure is invoked such as cracking the windows and starting the car horn in case of high temperature. On the other hand, when the car is ON, we assume that the parents are inside the car. Thus, only the car module is involved. Thus, the system detects if there is a child inside the car, if so, it measures the temperature, if it is out of the acceptable range a soft alarm is started in the car to warn the parent that the temperature is not normal for the child. Optionally, air conditioning or heater units can be automatically started until the temperature returns to its normal range.
