A test you'd think the camera review sites would try!

This is a very ugly comparison (lit by a 35w 3200k @ 4ft)

Canon 7D @ ISO 12600
vs
Panasonic GH2 @ ISO 12600

This comparison can never be made completely fairly
except for the noise signatures of each camera at ISO 12800

The Canon was used with a Nikon 28mm f2 @ f2

The Panasonic only has high ISO available with a Panasonic lens
in shutter priority mode. No control is given over aperature.
A Panasonic 20mm 1.7 Pancake was used and moved several inches
closer to make a comparative FOV to the 28mm on the Nikon.
ISO 12800 was hit on the Panasonic as confirmed by a still taken while
shooting with the same lighting in manual still mode.

Obviously both are extremely ugly and would be a last resort for any
type of project you may be working on.

Again, to reiterate, this test can never be done perfectly
unless both cameras can use the same lens.
The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 is leages ahead of most lenses wide open

  • Could you do another test with noise reduction to see what one cleans up best?

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom good thinking. I need cityscape footage to really test it out.

  • What about image settings? On 7D, try custom user settings: sharpnes and contrast all the way down and -2 color. I think that would give better results...

  • @IttePerkele Those are the settings I've used ever since my 7D tutorial days in 2009.

  • what's with all the colour shift happening on the GH2? does that always happen? that's a complete killer, I'd take the 7d before I took unpredictable colour shifting.

  • hey I'm looking at starting shooting music videos and short films, I'm stuck between the panaonic or the canon what would you advise to me the panasonic is a lot better when hacked than what the canons are thank you.

  • This is not a fair test for examining detail. You have the aperture open much further on the 7D as seen by the bokah on the wheel and the door handle. In addition the center of focus on the GH2 was on the dashboard, vs the 7d was about half way between the dashboard and the front wheel.

  • I don't see how this is even competitive. The gh2 noise is less intense and more tolerable in nature.

  • gh2's noise looks a little grainy like film almost. Its not bad

  • Just cause everyones a canon fanboy doesn't mean there better

  • i liked the canon look to me it was way better the other one had a yellow tint to it and wasnt as sharp to me

  • @eyepatchentertainmen Also could you test with Nikon, their cameras are the best in low light?
