Everything The Media Told You About Occupy Wall Street Is Wrong

Posted: 10/19/11 10:22 PM ET
After 10 days out of town, I finally made it to Occupy Wall Street on Tuesday and had a chance to see for myself what's going on. My conclusion: almost everything the media told me about the protest is wrong.
Based on my observations, here's what I consider the Top Ten Myths About Occupy Wall Street.
Myth #1. The Movement Is Violent.
One of the most striking images I witnessed at the demonstration was a young black man holding a sign that read "End NYPD Violence!" in front of a group of police officers.

The officers quickly challenged his accusation. But the young man didn't leave. Next, the police turned away and ignored him. But he still didn't leave. Then the officers chuckled and let out an unexpected laugh when they realized the man wasn't going away. The scene was confrontational, but definitely not violent.

In fact, one of the first things I noticed was a sign posted on a wall that embraced "Kingian Nonviolence," the peaceful principles that guided Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Arrests made at Occupy protests in US cities
At least 300 people held as national day of action marks two months since the start of the Occupy Wall Street movement.
Last Modified: 18 Nov 2011 05:57

Scores of Occupy Wall Street protesters have been arrested across the US after they attempted to mark two months since the movement against alleged corporate greed began.

In New York City police arrested at least 177 protesters on Thursday after they refused to end a blockade of a street intersection in the city's financial district. Some protesters, who resisted orders to leave, scuffled with the officers.

The rally, which began with a co-ordinated effort to shut down the stock exchange, grew into several thousand strong later in the day as the standard workday ended and unions joined a march across the Brooklyn Bridge, where last month more than 700 people were arrested.

Washington DC Occupy camps remain

In some ways, the Occupy Wall Street Washington DC encampment is the "last man standing" among all the Occupy movements in the US right now.

Two months after the protests broke out, many of the others have been cleared out or denied permission to pitch tents or sleep overnight in such places as Oakland, Philadelphia, New York - we've all seen the headlines!

I've just come back from the DC site in McPherson Square, only a couple of blocks from the White House, where I sought the views of the "residents" on why they think the authorities have largely left their camp alone.

Mass arrests at Occupy Wall Street protests
Thousands of demonstrators have marched across New York's Brooklyn Bridge in one of several US rallies of support for the Occupy Wall Street movement.

At least 300 people were arrested just in New York, many of them as trouble flared near the stock exchange.

Protesters accused police of brutality, with TV images showing a man with a bloodied face being arrested. At least five police officers were hurt.

The rallies marked two months since the movement against inequality began.

The march was planned before demonstrators were swept two days ago from New York's Zuccotti Park, where they had camped since mid-September.

  • OCCUPY

  • 1:22 "Protesters were warned; if you do not have a permit you may be arrested."

    Translation: "Papers please."

    Welcome to the U.S.S.A.

  • Interesting that the CBS Evening News reported on the 17th that the OWS seemed to being dying as only a couple of hundred protesters turned up that day. That's fewer than the number arrested. The Corporate Media is lying to mainstream America. Big surprise. They almost never report on excessive use of force by police or brutality.
