A two guitar arrangement of Jobim's short but haunting "Inútil Paisagem" (Useless Landscape), which he performed together with Elis Regina on the 1974 album "Elis & Tom". This arrangement is rather sparse compared to my others, as the jazz guitar part is simply the melody/vocal line, but it works well given the mood of the tune. The lyrics (which you can find below) were written by Aloysio de Oliveira.

Mas pra que
Pra que tanto céu
Pra que tanto mar,
Pra que
De que serve esta onda que quebra
E o vento da tarde
De que serve a tarde
Inútil paisagem
Pode ser
Que não venhas mais
Que não voltes nunca mais
De que servem as flores que nascem
Pelo caminho
Se o meu caminho
Sozinho é nada
É nada
É nada

I thought I'd experiment with some effects for this video... I don't plan on using them often, but I figured a B&W/film grain effect fit well with the music...

  • Hi Daniel, This performance on acoustic and electric guitars is absolutely beautiful! You know, I didn't even notice the B&W or grainy effect until I read what you wrote. That is how perfect adding that touch was for this song. Knowing when to keep an arrangement sparse, keeping to the melody as you did, is just another sign of the excellence which shines in you as a magnificent musician. I loved this performance. How wonderfully you breathe new life into the music of Jobim.

  • Thank you for the kind words, Joe, I appreciate it!! Glad you enjoyed my rendition. :)

  • Indeed very sad but also very beautiful and haunting atmosphere, played with great musicality, tranquility and passion, just what this Music needs and demands, greets Vic.

  • Thank you for the nice comment, Victor, I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

  • Great work Daniel. I must say it is most enjoyable watching you experiment with new ideas and styles, as well as your videographic techniques!.

  • Thanks! Glad you enjoyed my foray into darker-than-usual musical territory...

  • Excellent! Thank you for this piece of heaven.

  • You're more than welcome. Are you using "tape-loop" echo? It sounds like it. Doesn't sound like digital echo. Your guitar has an early echo-unit sound to it. : )

  • Very Nice. 5*

  • thanks for the comment and favorite, Dennis, I appreciate it!
