Stephen Muecke, Professor of Writing at UNSW's School of English, Media and Performing Arts speaks with author Qiu Xiaolong about his popular Inspector Chen detective series of novels; the massive changes taking place in his homeland China; and how to smuggle poets into Chinese literature.

Qiu Xiaolong was born in Shanghai in 1953. He was selected for membership of the Chinese Writers' Association and published poetry, translation and criticism in China. He has lived in the United States since 1989, and has an M.A. and Ph.D in Comparative Literature awarded by Washington University. His 10 published works have been translated into several different languages including Chinese, French, German and Spanish. Excerpts have also been published in many literary magazines in America and several anthologies. He received the Missouri Biennial Award, Anthony Award for Best First Novel, the Prairie Schooner Readers' Choice Award, a Yaddo and a Ford Foundation Fellowship.
