in competition you have ao=blue and aka=red. Only to differentiate the competitor. Nothing to do with grade, actually we dont have red in Karate.

Well, its not easy to answer. There is no jodan kick in traditional karate, chudan max. Now modern karate is going more and more toward Jodan in kata. As what is allowed you have to differentiate between Shitei and Tokui kata. In Tokui you can kick high as variation brought from the karate school are accepted.
