In my animal physiology lab, we dissected a turtle to learn about the physiology of a heart.
Don't worry, the turtle is anethsitized and pithed, so it didn't feel anything, and was technically dead, even though its tissues were still alive.

  • Struggling with the fact that concepts were studied? The end reaction points otherwise. IMO, sims. can work just as well. The argument that this is a learning scaffold for future physicians is moot. You can only substantiate this statement years down the road. What I do is create discussions centered around "value & need." These talks yield results with kids hitting the books hard & looking for alternatives vs. "live." I do hope the terrapin was used for food vs. ending up in the trash.

  • Dissections of organisms provide a level of understanding that cannot be replicated by any simulation. For those who are serious about entering into medicine or research, this experience is invaluable.

In what academic setting do you teach? If it is high school, then I would agree that this level of experiment is unnecessary and wasteful. However, if it is a collegiate setting, I pray that your students aren't crippled due to your "value & need discussions"

  • i wonder why some universities would waste animal lives for mere idiotic entertainment.

  • This turtle was not used for entertainment.

There were many physiological concepts that were learned during this 3-hour lab session.

Many of the procedures we followed allowed us to understand the concepts with much more depth.

Would you like YOUR future doctors to have a good understanding of how YOUR heart works?!

    just something to think about.
