12 years later and countless views, and I still feel like my heart is breaking everytime I see the faces of the coffin bearers, and John's poor mother.
There's a beautiful line in the book, after the funeral when Josie says, "Sometimes an hour has gone by and I haven't thought of John. Sometimes two, but then I remember that not a minute will ever go by when his mother won't think of him."
I often find myself hoping that John finally found the peace in death he so sorely longed for in life.

this is a sad scene
"For the rest of my life I'll want to know what they do with the sheets. Maybe they'll burn them."
"Or maybe they'll scrub, and scrub so that they can sleep with them for the rest of their lives."
That quote hits me so hard.
