Norwegian outdoors expert Lars Monsen embarks on an exciting adventure in Nordkalotten, the area of Scandinavia north of the Arctic Circle. In this episode, Lars joins his partner Nina and an old friend to make use of the snow on the Norway-Sweden border, which is still there in quantity, even in May. Not everything goes to plan, however, and Lars needs to call help (thereby showing the viewers how to do it).
Due to these unforseen circumstances, Lars changes the location of his tour, heading for the lowlands which, in contrast to the mountains, now have summer-like weather. After one of his trademark canoeing-and-fishing tours, he heads into Swedish bear country...

  • There are snakes that far north?! We have no snakes in Alaska because its too cold for them to live, yet they live in Norway?! It's even colder in Norway! So how are there snakes?!

  • @TalvellaMaa Good question! I always thought there WERE snakes in Alaska- just fewer than in the lower 48. Although most parts of Norway have colder winters than, say, Juneau, few parts of Norway have winter temperatures like Alaskan towns such as Fairbanks. Compared to the latter, we have milder winters and cooler summers. Central Scandinavia is the extreme northern limit of the European Adder, which presumably has a very hard time during our winters!

  • 0poi0 A 1000 "thank you's" for the uploads, I'm greatly enjoying each episode! One correction though; Elk is not know as Moose in North America, it is known as Elk; two different animals.

  • @drtisbeter : Glad you're enjoying these uploads. I see you've picked up on the Moose/Elk controversy! Alces alces is known as "Elk" in Europe and "Moose" in North America. Cervus canadensis is known as "Elk" in North America and "Wapiti" in many other places. You are right, though: what an American would call an Elk, and what an American would call a Moose are two different animals :)

  • now that is the life (minus the snakes)

  • @0poi0

They are both good eating though. I prefer Moose. Though the wolves have been really hard on the populations of both recently.

  • @TalvellaMaa where i live, around 200km north of the arctic circle, snakes doesn't exist.
