@ck066 Kenjutsu is the original way of Japanese sword fighting. Kenjutsu is translated as Sword Art. Kendo is usually referred to as the gentleman's sport, its the Japanese equivalent to fencing. While Kendo teaches a wide variety of techniques, it really can't be applied to street fighting. Kenjutsu was born for combat, and street fighting. There are few rules, most of them about not getting hit or dying, one about dropping your sword; It is a style strictly dedicated to the sword.
With all the respect that I have to Kendo, but the kendo born when the practice of Kenjutsu and use of the katana was banned in Japan. Kendo is a sport with rules established, just as happened with the Jujutsu when it was banned and was invented in Judo. The word martial is purely military language, this means that martial arts means arts of war. When it comes to sport martial arts the concept is totally wrong, one thing is sport and anything else is the military.
@pancreas2000 Kendo is not a sport... Kendo is a martial art. The shinai in Kendo signifies the Katana, and when applied with a Katana is essentially Kenjutsu without the specifics of any one style.
@ck066 Essentially the same. Kenjutsu is translated as Sword technique and Kendo is translated as Sword way. Essentially both are interchangeable. Once you learn Kendo, Kenjutsu is easy to pick up and vice versa.
i need to clarify, whats the difference between kenjutsu and iaido?, both are sword art right
