Copernicus was afraid of being ridiculed by other scientists, not of being punished by the Church. His model showed the possibility of a heliocentric solar system, but was in no way superior to the existing geocentric model. New models did arrive, with the Copernican and the Ptolomeic models fading away, which is when Galileo decided to support Copernicanism, and reject the other systems. He may have discovered the moons of Jupiter, but he didn't contribute much to the Copernican revolution.
