Chidambaram is the pre- eminent temple for Shiva in southern India. The image of the dancing Shiva originated from here. And now everybody has this dancing Shiva's image. And the image symbolizes activity and stillness together, it's dancing but it's a still dance. He is the unmoved mover, he doesn't move but he is himself very quite and silent. The term Chidambaram itself means the sky of consciousness. Chit-am-bara. It is where consciousness originated and he dances and the dancing is the symbol of activity. And the activity is not just physical activity but also a mental activity.

The mental activity is started by the dance of syllables or vowels and consonants, 51 in number. And these representatives, 51 sounds or alphabets are displayed to you in the sanctum, sanctorum of the temple that the central piece is the dancing Shiva. And his one side is the goddess and the other side is a screen, a curtain and behind the curtain they place this 51 alphabets that are responsible for originating consciousness.
So during the services they remove the curtain and ask you this is the secret of Chidambaram. Chidambara rahasyam. They won't explain it to you what it is but there are only 51 golden bilwa leaves which are inscribed the sounds that go to compose consciousness.
The idea is if you understand consciousness hidden in the alphabets or aksharas, as it is called in Sanskrit, then you have understood how the world is organized. Now the upcoming birthday of Shiva, called Arudra Darshan, Arudra is the star, in Tamil it is called the Thiruvathirai, when he was born, the rituals take place early in the mornings, it is the predawn ritual, millions of people gather there to witness this ritual. It is also a very very important time, the birth of Shiva is the birth of a new consciousness in you. And it's important that you can chant the new mantra of Shiva that I have revealed Va Ya Na Ma Si. Va Ya Na Ma Si will be the appropriate mantra to chant at the time of the birth of Shiva during the Arudra star or Thiruvathirai star. And that will help you to get rid of your old consciousness and establish a divine consciousness. Getting the divine consciousness is everything. the mind is changed and everything is changed. As long as the mind remains the same the whole reality will be the same. So if you want to change the reality outside you have to change the mind inside. And what do we do? we do just the opposite. We try to fix things outside, it's not going to work.

One of my teachers used to say that if you have to enjoy the fruit you have to water the roots. There is no point in watering the Trunk, the leaves, the flowers. It's just a waste of time. So you have to water the root to enjoy the fruit.

So similarly, you had to go and do something about your consciousness, about your mind because mind is your Karma. The mind is only just a tool for Karma to operate. So all these can be done if you are able to use this time of Arudra, the birth time of Shiva. It has promise for the humanity to change their mind and by changing their mind to change your life.
