Update: This works with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Mac X has speech recognition built in for dictating voice commands to the computer. The setup, of the speech recognition, is simple. Click on System Preferences -- Speech -- Speech Recognition tab, then start setting the system up. The process is quick and best of all this software comes free with the Mac.

  • I am looking to dictate speech like MacSpeech does. Will this do that?

  • @TheMySideproject This is not as advanced as MacSpeech

  • Do you think Mac OS X speech recognition or Windows speech recognition is better (at this time) ?

  • @theabcwriter Windows Speech is better. See

  • Is it possible to shut down your Mac using voice command?

  • how do you do speakable commands like "tell me a joke" ?

  • It won't do speech to text Only commands.

  • my computer calibration worked but the voice wont recodnise anything

  • When I speak the phrases, it recognises them. However, I say one normal command (such as "Get my Mail"), then it NEVER works until I logout and login again. It won't even recognise the calibrations until I login again.

  • @itsmeeeeeeeeeee You are not alone...

  • My mac doesnt recognise even one voice command. i tried caliberating the mic and my commands never flash or get recognised no matter how many times I speak or where I keep the slider. I guess I have a computer unfriendly voice. :-(

  • ive got a problem as well. i have the macbook pro and i tried using speech recognition with the internal mic. it works perfectly on other programmes but doesn't recognize on the speech command. and i don't know how the 'caliberate' thing works. i need help. please reply ASAP! thanks
