A Pacific giant octopus (Octopus doflleini) ambles over a boulder and away from the remotely operated vehicle. This species is the world's largest.

  • Giant Pacific Octopuses are actually not aggressive (unlike their large squid cousins). They are very inquisitive and playful though. I take care of this species in a public aquarium. They rock!

  • They do have gills. Their gills are located inside their mantle (the bulbous part of their body most layfolk think is their "head"). They bring water in through their opercular opening, run it over their gills and blow it out of their siphon :)
