Hello, It's Friday, July 6, 2007. I'm Rebecca Field in for Kristin Volk today with a UPI top news update.

One key Republican senator is breaking with Bush on Iraq. Senator Pete Domenici endorsed legislation yesterday calling for a withdrawal of U.S. troops in Iraq by next March. Dominici is the fourth senior Senate Republican recently to challenge Bush's strategy. He says while he doesn't endorse an immediate troop withdrawal, he will support a strategy to slowly move soldiers out of combat and back home.

The Pakistani government is demanding radical Islamic students following two days of fighting. Intelligence sources say nearly 1,000 students are remaining inside of the Red Mosque in Islamabad. They are reportedly running out of food and water. The students refuse to leave the Mosque unless they can surrender without arrest. The government says they will not meet those demands. Pakistani Police believe the group is involved in a string of civilian kidnappings.

The U.S. Army is investigating several marines, allegedly involved in civilian deaths in Iraq. The marines are accused of intentionally killing civilians in Falluja in November of 2004. CNN says those allegations come from a former Marine, who gave the information during a polygraph exam. During the incident, 8 Iraqis were captured and shot following a firefight.

The Western U.S. is trying to stay cool today. Yesterday the National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning for the area west of the Rocky Mountains. In the desert areas of Southern California, temperatures reached temperatures as high as 127 in Death Valley. Temperatures in Las Vegas and Phoenix Arizona reached highs of 117. Forecasters expect the heat to stick around today and some heat warnings are still in place.

That's all for now. Check out a new segment on our site about the struggles high school dropouts face. Thanks for watching.

  • I can't wait for the Mid-east peace to break out when we "withdraw". "A little genocide every now and then is a good way to thin out those Muslims. Then we can mop up the blood from the streets of America, then we can walk across the street for a latte at Starbucks. Brilliant! Truly Brilliant!
