  • Nicely done. Maybe explain what you're using/doing. You make it look like anyone could just rub 2 sticks together.

It's not easy without practice. Using the right wood, speed, pressure, and knowing when it was hot enough to stop were my hang-ups when I gave it a go.

  • A good thing to do is count 60 forward strokes of the drill, when you get to sixty do another 20 harder and faster because by the time you get to 60 the coal should have started to form but it needs that extra push to get it upto temperature (between 700 & 800 degrees faranheit dependant on the type of wood your using).

  • The rule I followed was from a survival book I've got which said drill hard wood into soft wood, it worked for me but I've since read in a Ray Mears book that the wood I'd chosen for my hearthboard (Alder) was one of the best woods to use for fire lighting well at least it is here in the UK. You have to experiment with all types of wood and see which ones work best. Once mastered you could use this technique anywhere in the world!

  • I drilled Ash into Alder but have had even better results with a Willow drill, ash you have to work harder for longer to get the coal forming. It definitely gives you a workout!
