@arseropes for example, you can call Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath proto-metal because they are the forefathers of metal (room for debate). No one says I listen to "proto-metal" though...you know? They say I listen to metal or classic rock (genres). Same with protopunk. Stooges, MC5 and NY Dolls are commonly considered the forefathers of punk (room for debate). They term those bands protopunk. You don't say "I listen to protopunk" It's all just rock and roll anyway.
