Imagine finding out the car you've been making payments on doesn't really belong to you. You've bought a stolen car without knowing it. While the police investigate, your vehicle is in their lockup, and your loan payments go on and on and on. Car thieves can pass off a stolen car as legit by replacing the VIN, or vehicle identification number, with another VIN. There are simple ways to avoid becoming a victim of VIN cloning if you're shopping for a used car, including ordering a CARFAX Report.

  • A vehicle history report may indicate dual registrations for a VIN, which could help a car buyer uncover a potentially cloned VIN. In addition to getting the vehicle history report and comparing all of the VINs on the car (VINs are found in several locations on a vehicle), a buyer may also want to request the service records from the seller and verify that the VIN on the service records matches the VIN on the vehicle itself.
