This is part 1 (of 2) of the tutorial on holding patterns and procedure turns.

Holding pattern information can be found in the instrument flying handbook, chapter 10, pages 9 and 11, here is the link:

  • where do you get all the charts?

  • @FF35Pilot

For all the US charts you can go to two websites:

    skyvector . com

    on-final . com

  • Good stuff. I learnt holding patterns from the training missions built into flight simulator. It didn't go into the depth you did - but all the key info was there!

    Great info, my man

  • @jonthedoors

Wait until part 2, your head will spin, LOL, I should have it up sometime tonight (I hope), probably in about 6-8 hours or so, I'm just doing the graphics for it right now.

Thanks Jon, have you recovered from your second flight yet???LOL

  • Wow this helped. Except 1 thing, on an airliner, you can select how many degrees bank you need. But which setting do I choose? I usually do 20 degrees bank for a turn.

  • @bob22903

The airliners have a flight director to help them out, but 15-25 degree banks is just fine. Only mathematics is an exact science, with flying you have to be able to adjust a you go, one day you can have stronger winds and the other light winds, so you have to adjust to every situation individually. You'll see this even more during Part 2, where the procedure turns ONLY put you IN A POSITION to enter the approach, nothing is exact and there will always be minor adjustments.

  • My FS goals:

Memorize the procedures of all my pay ware aircraft - Check!

Learn how to fly an ILS approach - Check!

Learn how to fly a VOR DME approach and how to fly an Arc ;) - Check!

Learn how to fly an aircraft with a failure during every phase of flight - Check!

Learn how to fly a holding pattern - Mmmmmm... maybe I'll stay here for a while :)

  • @FSX404 thanks, i don't fly in the US often, cos I'm from GB, so I usually do little cross border flights, and I want to move on from the rubbish ATC vectoring...

  • your flight videos are the most educational of them all

  • Well Alright.. FINALLY! A good explanation.

  • @bob22903 Coincidentally I just read this regulation because I am studying for an airline interview I hope to get called for! It is in the Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) ch 5-3-7 which you can read at faa dot gov. Scroll up two pages from the last frame of chapter 5: " 6. Pilot action... (b) Make all turns at

    - 3 degrees per second (standard rate) or

    - 30 degree bank angle or

    - 25 degree bank provided a flight director system is used.

Note: Use whatever requires the least bankangle

  • good info fsx404, I didn't know that the faster you traveled the more bank you needed. now onto part 2 ;-)

  • In holding pattern, do we don't make turns like procedure turns ( teardrop, parallel or direct)?
