Taken from the BBC broadcast of a 1990 Glyndebourne Festival performance.

Mozart: Marriage of Figaro

Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment
Conductor: Simon Rattle
Production: Peter Hall

Conte Almaviva - William Shimell

In 1990 the Glyndebourne Festival had a little revolution in its sacred halls: Simon Rattle conducted a production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. What was so special about this production is the fact that for the first time in the festival's history an orchestra of period instruments was used. To up the ante, there was also a radical departure of its 56 year old established performance practice: Mozart was to be performed with full use of appoggiaturas and ornamentation.

  • 4 people are jealous of William Shimell getting to act with Juliette Binoche ;-)

  • Woah, half of the aria is just shouted, the other half incredibly sloppy.

  • @rontomcol not jalous but I don't like the version: for me the pronunciation is awful 0:13 1:06 and many other... the voice is not beautiful, and extracts more spoken than sung 3:46 and many other things that make that I don't like this version

  • Oh god, spending half of the aria singing while sitting in a chair, that is just bad form.

  • i watched kiarostami's certified copy today and i wondered why i couldn't see this good, intelligent actor on the other films before, now i've got it. he's a wonderful singer.

  • this is the oritorio. sorry if i misspelled.

  • I've been looking at this 1990 Glyndebourne Simon Rattle Figaro and it's really very bad. It had some potential. The period orchestra is playing gorgeously but these singers focus only on drama. They don't sing their recitatives, they speak them. They really do treat this like it was a play despite the fact it's only based on a play and it's OPERA. William Shimmel's Count is terrible - poor diction, bad voice, and like with others they all look at the camera! This is a terrible Figaro.

  • Catastrophe , his diction, and this feeble, cumbersome orchestra… hmm… (shouldn’t L’ Conte be decisive rather than truculent, oppressive, in this aria..)

  • beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @piasecznik You are right, very bad singer, bad performance.

  • @alexandrevlad37 ma come grande! vorrai dire bello e affascinante - e lo si è visto nel film di Cannes - ma è un cantante molto modesto, pessima pronuncia italiana, troppo esagitato in scena. No davvero non sono d'accordo.
