Paul Washer from Heart Cry Mission says believers should not gain their assurance from the Gospel itself. Instead, believers are to find people less righteous than they are, to compare themselves to. Apparently, once a believer realizes how much better he is than other men, he should "rejoice".
Washer says, "If you're sitting here and you're wondering whether you're not saved, or whether you are. Just envision for a moment. Stand beside a student you know to be an unbeliever. Are you like them? Do you have the same desires and concerns that they have? Do you dress the same way? Talk the same way? Is your morality the same? Is there no concern for God in your life just like there's no concern for God in theirs? Is the Word of God not have a place in your life at all? You ought to be very afraid. But if you're a struggling Christian and you put yourself beside that unbeliever and yes, you do see a difference, then rejoice." (Sermon, "How can you have Assurance", from 39:05).
This flatly contradicts the Scripture. God says believers have "boldness and access in confidence through His faith" (Eph 3:12).
True Assurance is based on the Truth/Promise/Testimony/Gospel of God which is believed in the mind. This infallible evidence is sufficient to give the believer assurance. After all, natural man is deprived of truth (1 Tim 6:5). So to possess the truth is a unique thing which for the elect alone. To demand any other grounds for assurance other than the truth, is to make the truth useless.

BELOW IS A RESPONSE TO COMMENTS ON MY VIDEO "WASHER VS OSTEEN? BOTH TEACH SEEKING FOR SALVATION"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWUIdhlGVbA
Response to user "Diligentile"
He wrote me...
"This woman [who Washer told to pray to God for salvation] was miserable and had no peace with God in her life. Shall she just stop seeking God and just pursue the things of the world? ... In Isaiah, I see turning to,seeking, and calling on God for mercy. Isaiah 55:6-7 Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon."
MY RESPONSE...
Hi Diligentile. Hope you're well.
Hope this verse helps...
"How can they call on Him in whom they have not believed?" (Rom 10).
That's logical. A sick person can't call the town doctor if they don't believe he exists! But unbelievers say in their heart, "there is no God", so they cannot call on God.
And James says, "Ask IN FAITH". The lady did not have faith. So all her "asking" of God are mere echoes of what Washer tells her to say.
She is a dumb parrot, not knowing the God she tries to honor with her lips. She is a blind woman talking about colors!
Moreover, "He that comes to God MUST BELIEVE THAT HE IS and a Rewarder of them that diligently seek Him." (Heb 11:6)
So, clearly the woman needed TO BELIEVE before she could pray!
And this makes sense. If it's through faith that we understand who God is and what he's done -- then how can an unbeliever (without faith), know anything about God?!
And can you call on someone you are ignorant of?! "They know not God", "are ignorant", "know nothing", are "brute beasts", "fools", "without knowledge".
As Hosea said, "My people perish for lack of knowledge".
Oh, and by the way, regarding Isaiah 55... It is easily explained by Acts 8:22...
Unbelievers are to "REPENT and pray". So the change of mind (repentance) precedes the prayer.

You dare judge someone's salvation or standing with God based on HOW they present the scriptures? What, you always have to do it with zeal?
You need to take a step back and really examine yourself. Your whole post was nothing but trolling and it was insulting even to me. I was disgusted reading it, you need to change your attitude. Mr self righteous.

You just about put me to sleep...That isn't preachin, Your a terrible preacher. Just take something simple (like the Bible) and complicate it...You bore us to tears. If you were to look up the def. of bull shit - you would be listed... Jesus is the only way, the rock of salvation...If your not angry, if your not happy, if your not expressing emotion, when expressing scripture, your not right with god. This is the living book, for when it is opened you come alive - Your so blind and deaf.

If ANYONE find Paul Washer' messages-as at date for I know not tomorrow- repulsive or wrong in anyway, then I am afraid for that fellow.
One hardly ever find the truth these days; and to say anything wrong about Pauls messages is alarming.
Jesus said those He loves He rebukes them - a child left without rebuke is sure on the path of destruction. Apostle Paul wrote to the Cotinthians - EXAMINE YOURSELVES. Soft messages corrupt the word and waters it down; a bomb waiting to go off

@ojaymon I've also listened to Andrew Bain and he also has a pitbull personality which I don't agree with, but just as Paul Washer they have a good sound foundation of doctrine. I'm confident that a New Creature in Christ is better demonstrated with love rather than rebuke. Rebuke (Law) is for those who resist sound doctrine and I don't think thats the case when people are humbly in submission to the Word of God and eager to learn.

@ojaymon I've listened to Paul Washer and I agree with him on doctrinal issues, but we part ways when it comes to the love of the brethren. To attack strangers who are assembled with open ears and hearts to the Word of God with the presuppostion that they are followers of false gospels and then take the opportunity to propagate doubt in their minds of their eternal security and understanding of the Gospel is reprehensible. Speak to edify, encourage and perfect the Body of Christ

@JesusNonEnviromental With due respect, I disagree with your understanding of Paul Washer's message. Nothing you are saying here applies to the essence of what Paul Washer is saying. I perceive you are not discerning this matter deeply and spiritually. You are bringing up sentimental arguments. AndrewcBain has simply just distorted Paul Washer's statements in order to build strawman arguments against him. Friend, I perceive that you do not seem to discern the times and the deceptions thereof
