This Bessie Smith classic has been covered by many artists including Eric Clapton. Clapton's version is great but he changed the original melody line to facilitate his vocal range. I felt that there's something magic about Bessie Smith's vocal melody and so I decided to play it where I could more closely mirror Bessie's version.. Due to the recent economic downturn and Wall Street Ponzi scandals, the song lyrics have again rung true for many of the affected. Instead of an instrumental break I authored a fictional talking narrative as to why I'm down and out. This is a live solo performance. Apologies for the short-shorts and hairy leg. - FK

  • fretkillrlives...you are so awsome! What a great talent! God bless, Brother Charlie (froggiechar)

  • Bessie used to do it, what a tune she could carry, a little known fact is: sporting a leg just as hairy ... ; ) [sorry Bessie, maybe call it "strange root"]

  • Excellent! You just inspired me to tap into the blue in me! Dig the way you and Bessie do it!

  • Bessie Smith była tylko jednym z wielu wykonawców tego klasyka, była pierwszą, która spowodowała, że stał się bardzo popularny. Jednak utwór napisał na początku lat dwudziestych ubiegłego stulecia Jimmy Cox. Inni wielcy, którzy mieli ten utwór w swoim repertuarze, to oczywiście Eric Clapton, Otis Redding, Rod Stewart, Janis Joplin, B.B. King, Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, Bobby Womack, Steve Winwood i The Spencer Davis Group, Peter, Paul and Mary, Gareth Hedges, The Chad Mitchell Trio.

  • You ARE Houdini fret!

  • Love that part of your vocal range - sounds like a velvetty "pre-falsetto".

  • man, you touch me (in a non-sexual way of course !)

  • It is so good to have you back. I still think you sound like Richie Havens, but that's my problem.
