@therealblueninja Not entirely. The Dutch general Maurits of Oranje changed the Dutch army after reading through Roman manuals I believe, making it more like the Roman regiments and checkerboard formation. Which was eventually copied by the other powers.

@MrAttilatheHun It's interesting to see that in other countries historians end Middle Age before: we (France) end it with the fall of Constantinople and with Colombus' discovery (and I think they end it differently as well in Germany??). And Renaissance is considered a time period for us (perhaps because Renaissance was more important in our country, beeing closer to Italy than England). Also, I agree we can argue on this one.
@MrAttilatheHun So happy to see a colleague in History...well, I totally disagree with your final date of the Middle Ages. It simply doesn't make any sense to me.. 'course any date we can choose it's a conventional date but, 1640? Thirty years war still on the move, the baroque already changing itself in rococo..can we still talk of Medieval age in the 17th century? I disagree.

@MrAttilatheHun Anyway, all you said about Renaissance is true, but I just thought that "Renaissance" was also a word that: "...has been much debate among historians as to the usefulness of Renaissance as a term and as a historical delineation" -Brotton, J.,The Renaissance: A Very Short Introduction, OUP, 2006. so I intended it more as a "history segment" than a cultural movement.
