Leading cardiac and vascular surgeons from Brigham and Women's Hospital will webcast a live minimally invasive endovascular thoracic aortic stent-graft repair on OR-Live.com

A thoracic aortic aneurysm is a widening or bulging of part of the wall of the aorta within the chest -- the body's largest artery. The risk factors for thoracic aneurysms include atherosclerosis, hypertension, and a history of smoking. Treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysm traditionally involves surgery to replace the damaged portion of the aorta with polyester graft. Recently developed as an alternative to the conventional open surgical repair, which requires a major operation with the possibility of complications, and a long recovery, endovascular stent-graft repair offers a new less invasive alternative for thoracic aneurysm repair with less risk of complications, decreased blood loss, and a faster recovery.

  • yes smoking and an atherogenic (high in fat) diet as well as a variety of other factors can all lead to hypertension(high blood pressure) which in turn could cause an aneurysm due to the build up in pressure in the aorta.
