The Blue Lakes Trail is one of my favorites in Ouray County. On July 11th, I and several friends met to hike to the lower Blue Lake to celebrate 6-year old Cooper Ahern's birthday. The trailhead is located at the end of East Dallas Road (CR 7) off Highway 62, west of Ridgway. It's a fairly strenuous uphill hike, but well worth the challenge, with great vistas, waterfalls, creek crossing, and the first leg ending in a sweeping amphitheater at Lower Blue Lake. This was our destination that day, but the trail carries on even more steeply to middle and upper Blue Lakes and the Blue Lakes Pass, another 2+ miles. The trail carries on to the trailhead from the Yankee Boy Basin side about another 2 miles. For more information on the Ouray County trails check out: http://ouraytrails.org. As you'll see, we had a wonderful day with wonderful friends in wonderful, breathtaking scenery, all in our backyard just minutes from home.
