  • Lol, he was thinking of Hannible Rising at the end. VEry funny too.

  • Well now that you said it, I can't think about how one people - Illyrians were left from the history books concerning Rome. Ronald Syme[14] outlined the importance of Illyricum as the province that held the empire together. As a main recruiting ground, with armies ever present in its territory, it possessed[15] a commander in-chief of the Illyrian army, the magister militum per Illyricum, based at Naissus. ~ source: Wikipedia

And strict officers with wooden sticks for beating. :D

  • Not to forget that the Roman army like we know it: a strong well diciplined professionnal army, was created by Gaius Marius, one of Rome most brilliant generals of whom peace was his defeat.

  • Hannibals army consisted mainly out of well trained cavalry and mercenaries. The Roman army consisted out of farmers and weak cavalry. The combination of good Cavalry and Hannibals cunning was the key to his succes, otherwisely in a normal battle, without all the things Hannibal inserted, the Roman (land-)army was way stronger then the Carthagian land-army

  • Rome's first ships were build by the Greeks in Magna-Graecia, the Greek colonies in Italy then under Rome's command. With those ships Rome attacked Carthage and won, dumbfounding the Carthagian admirals, of course when your enemy is defeated and his lands under your control, why destroy the good things. Romanise it and use it. When Hannibal first faught the Romans he was thrilled by their disipline: after the Romans saw the battle was lost they retreated IN CLOSED FORMATION.

  • Yes I agree, after Rome became de facto world super-power its strength and organization was by far the greatest. But I still remember the documentary from some historian and traveler (now deceased) from my country who talked about Carthage. After Romans defeated Carthage for the last time, they took carthagian ships and copied them board by board. As for their discipline, roman soldiers were beaten constantly by their superior who always carried a stick ready for beating.

  • You know a State that is able to copy other's idea's and perfectionnate them often stronger then a state that doesn't. The movies are more or less correct about the armies of Rome because they rarely are about the beginning of Rome, but already when Rome really starts to get power very fast. They took the ships from Greeks, the shields were already common in Latium before Rome.
