I don't know what this was, but I liked it. It morphed from chaos, to a whale song, to just plain creepy, and back to chaos.
This was Buffalo Collision at the Monterey Jazz Festival 2009.
If the audio gets boring, pay attention to the visual.
Strangely enough, I categorized it in "Music"

  • At 2:10 Dave is using a baby toy (a penguin that makes a chiming sound when pushed) to make creepy sounds. He's well known for his use of completely unorthodox percussion equipment, and his band Happy Apple got their name from a similar toy Fisher Price used to make in the 70's.

  • tim berne is the sax player.

  • One, good for you for being open to even trying this music...and then you liking it is even better. Too many times, people overlook the more creative aspect of jazz and just go for the old, worn out jazz of the past.

And secondly, if you haven't already figured this out...and if you'd like to check out more...Ethan Iverson (the pianist) and Dave King (drummer) are members of The Bad Plus as well as other side projects, and almost everything they touch is amazing.

    Enjoy!
