I agree 5 minuets is pretty long I wait about 30 seconds before I set it

@ihuntwisconsin I disagree. Myslelf and 3 others went ice fishing yesterday and we brought home 12 northerns averaging 3 and a half pounds. Not once did we hesitate to set the hook, yes wait to feel tension, then set the hook, but dont wait 5 minutes, I never heard of that. The longer we waited to get to the tip ups the more we lost fish...

@WebguyAngler Everyone I see fishing lets the tip up run although I always set the hook right away and I have a good hook up rate!

on tip ups should i let the fish eat the minnow for a while thatn set the hook or get to the tip up write away and set the hook as soon as possible?

Esox niger more commonly called chain pickerel due to the chain like pattern on their sides. They also have a black marking that extends down from each eye which a pike does not have.

will a medium size crappie, or a medium sized blue gill set off a tip up like that?
