Unless you plan on running into stuff, what does it matter? It saves weight, it's ding resistant & the car itself did well protecting the occupants during the government crash tests. It's not a luxury car, it's an inexpensive (compared to most) sports car. GM must be doing something right, the corvette has been in production non stop since 1953.
