"Hi, my name is George. I am an international student in Australia. Australia's a great place but it is different from home. I am always learning new things and meeting lots of interesting people. I have to look after myself for the first time in my life. One thing I have learnt is, you need to be aware of your new environment. Pay attention to your surroundings and most important think before you travel. Look after yourself and stay safe."

George is one of the 650,000 international students in Australia, many of whom are not accustomed to the danger signs in our urbanised society, and some have been inadvertently placing themselves in high-risk situations. As the face of Australia's first digital campaign addressing student safety, George aims to spread the word about student safety to other international students or future students through media channels most likely to reach this audience.

Stakeholders from a wide variety of Australian agencies including police, government, education and industry have contributed both funds and in-kind services to support Think Before.

Important safety tips can be found at the campaign's website. International students are urged to think before they travel late at night, specifically around how to avoid high risk situations that could leave them vulnerable.

The campaign is being rolled out across multiple platforms and social media sites are a key feature, including Facebook, Twitter and international social media sites in 13 country-specific languages.

  • Has the thought ever occured that most Australians do not want people comming here, doing a bogus hair dressing course, living 16 to a house and eating rice, and never go home, this makes me angry that Australian citizenship is marketed to the third world in the form of education, if they come to study then that should be it, after study no PR, theres a shortage of houses and little job opertuinaty for Australians as it is without bringing in more problems.

  • herro i am international studaaaent you want some fried dimsum?

  • @gollstar Unfortunately, it is unworldly and obviously uneducated citizens such as yourself who cast a distorted view on what the majority of Australian citizens actually feel about a our international migration program.

  • @TheCrankydragon its a kebab

  • THINK BEFORE YOU EAT THE ICECREAM

  • @gollstar are you aboriginal? if not then you are also an immigrant. Maybe not first generation but immigrant nonetheless. durrrrrrrrrr

  • So, George does everything that he shouldn't do but the only thing that happens to him is that he gets sauce on his pants? Is the message here that international students should wear headphones to stay out of trouble?

  • I'm currently studying in Aus and this country is nothing less than top tier awesomeness, however uni is much difficult than what I was used to back home, so, visit or "immigrate", but never study here

  • Can someone tell me what on earth is the message here?

  • @gollstar didnt you know immigration changed the rules. You cant do a quick fix qualification to stay in your precious country anymore. Yes im an international student (UK), and no i dont agree ith it either, but im working my butt off saving money to ay off the $64 grand the education degree is costing me and a lot of other students are doing the same. There are the same probs in the UK. Deal ith it. You obviously live quite a sheltered life yourself if thats the way you think...

  • Thank you for this..............

  • @gollstar

why thank u gollstar for perpetuating the idea that australians are closed minded self centered morons who would like to stay in a hole and not interact with ppl from other countries. Theres a shortage of jobs everywhere, deal with it.

Frankly speaking not everyone is like you, thank god for that.
