They don't trace missiles with GPS. They use radar. They can track satellites IF they don't break up. And IF the satellite falls in areas where there is radar coverage.
As missiles generally don't break up in flight, and in most cases, are flying AT things with radar......
It helps to have a little information, rather than running on like a prat.

On a serious note - I am very upset that this mission is not going to succeed. Would have been marvelous.

The Russians should probably give up on Mars probes. While the US manages to get about half of theirs to work, neither Russia nor the USSR ever got a single one to work.
Now, they did pretty well with their Venus probes, so perhaps the Russians should try going IN instead of OUT.
