Plugged in the wrong way, the hot side of the AC line is connected to the metal chassis through a .05 mfd capacitor. You will get shocked if you touch the metal chassis and some part of your body is grounded such as having your other hand holding onto a metal water pipe. Most likely lethal. Trained techs. are aware of this danger and avoid it such as by using a variac. Having it plugged in like this can sometimes also add some static to the audio. I restored a Zenith radio just like this one.

I plugged my amp in after inspecting the wires, the owner said it has never been tested since to 60's and it was bought in 55, I turned it on and bam! Everything worked, the tubes had a slight glow and it was rated at 115 volts, odly enought it worked for about 20 minutes and then the tubes got very, very bright and all at onece they blew along with the transformer! woops.

So, if I was to plug this radio in one way i would be fine if I touched the case; if I plugged it in the other way, it could kill me, right? I'm just wondering because I just bought an x551 radio. I've only had two different tube radios but, I've never used a variac on them; just plugged them in and stood back when I turned them on.

Hi,
I'm in Knoxville, and get over to Sevierville occasionally. I will be going to the Ten-Tec hamfest (ham radio event & flea market) on Sat. Sept. 26th, in Sevierville. Drop on by and say hello! My email address is my youtube ID, and add (at) yahoo (dot) com. Drop me a line. Glad you enjoyed the video. I am going to remake these with better quality, and nice background this fall.
Best wishes!
Keith
