Tim Driskell and Joseph Whitley, hydrologic technicians with the United States Geological Survey, prepare the Acoustic Doppler Current Profile, a sonar instrument that resembles a miniature boat, for its journey across the Neponset River to check the river's depth and velocity. The boat travels across a pulley system from one side of the river to the other, collecting 20 measurements per second, which will be calculated into the amount of rainfall that fell during the recent storm. The boat travels across the river eight times to get an accurate reading.
