Abraham Lincoln seemed to be underestimated from day one. Underestimated as both a leader and an orator, Mr. Lincoln surprised both his colleagues and his critics as he climbed the ranks toward political prominence. Once he ascended to the presidency, instead of surrounding himself with a cabinet of yes-men, Lincoln built a team filled with rivals of not only of himself but with each other. This president then proceeded to meld this group of large personalities together to form a team who guided the nation to victory during our darkest period of conflict. Participants in this program will be learning about Lincoln's superhuman empathy, superlative sense of political timing, and endless well of patience. But what really sets this leader apart was his ability to strike compromise and control his own emotions-whether under attack by subordinates or besieged by public opinion. Our 16th president provides us with learning opportunities in the areas of leadership, strategy, communication and emotional intelligence.
