@jtothalo01 But it is also the truth behind the role, speaking as a man i can say that i would scream and cry if raped by another man, I am sure most men would be in fear and in some cases scream and cry and it is the actors job to give their own interpretation of that role
-
@davidbeatty exactly, my college tutor has always prompted us to find our own interpretation of the text, stage directions are only a guide :)

This is just flat!! Agree with the comment below, that the screaming DOESN'T work. It's not about what's best for the actor - that's arrogance - it's how you serve the play, and how best to heighten the audience experience! Have just finished playing Ian only last night, and know that the rape scene in particular works best when Ian is silent. That in an audience's lap, needs the silence! The crying here is just what the actor thinks he should be doing, and not what he feels, and that's fake!

However, Sarah Kane explicitly stated that in her plays stage directions are AT LEAST as important as the actual words being said, if not more important, and are to be followed with pedantic accuracy.

Great audition!

love sarah kane's work
she was not scared to say what is frowned upon
her obscenity works and is necessary to convey her work
this is a good audition

I agree!

Does anybody actually write any more or is all modern theatre as sub-literate?
'In-yer-face' says it all.
How unutterably tiresome.
The only thing I didn't like was Ian crying and begging for mercy while he was raped, when the stage directions clearly state 'Ian's face registers pain, but he is silent'.

I think when a author writes stage directions they are suggestions not rules. One actor could cry and scream and it be the wrong choice for that actor... however another actor making the same choice could knock it out of the park simply because he understands how to make that choice affective in the given circumstance. Personally, I say ignore all stage directions and make discoveries for yourself.
