Trailer from the movie "The Satanic Rites Of Count Dracula" (aka "Dracula And His Vampire Bride" or again "Dracula Vit Toujours a Londres" for the french people)
@trapadoored Actually, I didn't think FL was so bad as Skeletor. Many people say he brought the most energy to that film. // In an interview, FL said that he didn't want to imitate Bela Lugosi. FL made him more tragic, and also made him more charming. (You wouldn't mind having a drink with him.)
Sir Lurence Olivier is Abraham Van Helsing and Donald Pleasence (from Halloween) is Dr. Seward.
Can't say I saw Palance or Buffy.
If I see the F moive you spoke of, I will watch it. .
@eternalhalloween1 Cushing in Frankenstein is not like Cushing in Star Wars. Grand Moff Tarkin was just a military figurehead guy. Nothing special-although he fares much better than Christpher Lee did as Count Dooku in the later bad Star Wars movies. (lucas is obviously a hammer fanatic) Cushing as frankenstein on the other hand is brilliant devious and gets to screw all the hot babes and use them. It's easily the most vilanous and coolest frankenstein portrayal ever.
@eternalhalloween1 I'm sure Langella's Dracula is better than his skeletor performance -(that's all I've really seen him in) -although from what I remember there is no blood or fangs shown in the 31 dracula either. In a related note, isn't there a dracula where he's played by Jack Palance? Never seen it but I saw a clip from it on Buffy the Vampire slayer back in the day- it looks like it would be hilarious.
@trapadoored Well I have respect for the 1931 Lugosi version. I don't know if you saw the 1979 Langella/Olivier version. But Langella makes him more of a tragic figure. I also like how Langella didn't use blood or fangs. He makes Dracula look quite normal. The kind of guy you wouldn't think twice about sitting down and having a drink with.
(All the more frightening when he does the murders.) If you haven't seen it, you should.
I think lugosi added sexuality to the concept of vampirism -dracula in the book was supposed to be ugly -repulsive, lugosi was seductive and hypnotic. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't have had the later versions. And I think he himself commented on the dillemma of eternal life with his "there are far worse things that await man than death"
@trapadoored I haven't seen him in "Frankenstein," so I can't comment. But I prefer Mr. Cushing's good guy role here to his more popular bad guy role in "Star Wars."
Frank Langella also underlined that eternal life is not all it's cracked up to be. That's one reason I like the 1979 Langella/Olivier version. I watch Lugosi once or twice a year.
And this version and Mr. Lagella's (1979) version are the ones I watch the most.
As much as I love the dynamic between Chris Lee and Peter Cushing in the drac/van helsing movies, I am torn. I really think Dr. Frankenstein might be Cushing's best role. His obsessed researcher with no moral compasswho is smarter than everyone else is perfect. But I love the plot of this movie. Dracula can't die, eternal life does kinda turn out to suck, so he decides to destroy the world. I actually kinda feel sympathy for him.
