Cracking the Maya Code: The story behind the centuries-long decipherment of ancient Maya hieroglyphs Part 4

The ancient Maya civilization of Central America left behind an intricate and mysterious hieroglyphic script, carved on monuments, painted on pottery, and drawn in handmade bark-paper books. For centuries, scholars considered it too complex ever to understand—until recently, when an ingenious series of breakthroughs finally cracked the code and unleashed a torrent of new insights into the Mayas' turbulent past. For the first time, NOVA presents the epic inside story of how the decoding was done—traveling to the remote jungles of southern Mexico and Central America to investigate how the code was broken and what Maya writings now reveal.

  • This Thompson guy sounds like a real nightmare. Exactly the kind of block head we don't need in science.

  • And have you watch kids who can't write like we do ...they draw pictures try to tell us what they feel or what they want to tell us but they can't ....

  • Well most of ancient people always belived in sun , for some reason the sun was their god. I've noticed in couple monuments or tablets there shows hands and sun , maybe some kind of pray to the sun. Imagine you at that time , you can't write like now we all do but you want leave something behind. what would you do? Make a test symbolic by takeing your wards in to picture. I guess that what they did.

  • Have you noticed that they all have dark eyes and dark hair?
