Well most of ancient people always belived in sun , for some reason the sun was their god. I've noticed in couple monuments or tablets there shows hands and sun , maybe some kind of pray to the sun. Imagine you at that time , you can't write like now we all do but you want leave something behind. what would you do? Make a test symbolic by takeing your wards in to picture. I guess that what they did.

or the more ancient indian more simpler hiroglyphs.

Perhaps Substituting One sound with different alphabets was their way of Calligraphy.
