I needed a reed for my converted loom and decided to make one. This is what I came up with. I *just* finished making it and have not tried to weave with it yet. I want to let it sit over night so that the sticky tape I used has time to cure and for the bow in the middle to straighten out a bit more. I'll be warping my loom with it real soon and will report back to you how it works out.

UPDATE: The wood I was using was damp since it was being stored outside and got rained on. I did not give it sufficient time to dry..and due to the moisture, there was double sticky tape/hot glue failure. The tape and hot glue slid off during the night when the wood started coming back to straight.

Now that the wood has completely dried, I re-did the whole thing except this time I added a stick in the middle to keep it from bowing in (which I'll knock out later). I put the tape again and wrapped just like in the video. After wrapping, I used Duco Cement (epoxy) instead of hot glue. I'm going to let this completely dry this time before cutting the threads off.

UPDATE #2: This is going to work! Epoxy was the key. I successfully sleyed this reed and am in the process of adding the heddles to the warp. So far it's pretty good! It's keeping the warp threads from going crazy. I'm not confident that I can use this as a beater, I just mainly wanted something to keep the warp threads even. This is doing the trick so far! Will do another video once I start actually weaving.

Here's another way to make a reed: brilliant!

I have a page AND a group with tons of really nice talented people at the group. I also have some videos at the main site that aren't here on youtube. ;) So please stop by and visit! :D

  • I thought of doubling them back over but not sure how to accomplish that. Would it be possible for you to make a video showing this process?

  • The reason I didn't wrap them back around after cutting is because they were too short to wrap and then tie off...unless you're thinking of a different way of doing it?

  • Duco is nitrocellulose not epoxy. :)

  • One way to make the reed even more able to take being used is instead of trimming off the excess ends of the strings, you could have doubled them back over and fixed them into place to add just a little extra insurance that they never moved or loosened.
