Directed, shot and edited by Sebastien Haizet- Project in collaboration with Megan Otis

During the summer of 2007 in Rio de Janeiro, Sébastien Haizet and Megan Otis worked in close association with São Martinho, a non-governmental organization working in the promotion of street children's rights and
advocacy. Through a series of interviews with the organization's lawyers, counselors, shelter care-takers and the children themselves, this video project is an attempt to contextualize the realities of the city's street children and Human Rights workers within a larger historical framework of prejudice and discrimination. Through their words, this project seeks to give a glimpse on the lives of these children whose existence is prominently dictated by perceptions of contempt, deeply ingrained in the state's conservative judiciary, sensational media, and the socio-cultural fabric of the city itself.

Our aim is to broaden understanding of the reality of Rio's street children, and to re-ascribe to them the one identity they need and deserve: their innocence. This piece is an introduction to a larger project of research to be completed in the upcoming years.
