I got curious when my son told me that they learned about Earthquakes in school. So, we made a video of us watching some clips on YouTube.

  • Exactly! I had a flashback to 1994-95 when I taught web searching and literacy ... the same concept, but tools have change, but the fear and anxiety haven't

  • Actually, I was concerned about that and we spent a lot more time talking about it without the camera rolling. We talked about the ricter scale -- and I shared with him that I had experienced a very small Earthquake that didn't kill anyone.

  • You modeled so well asking Harry what he wanted to know. The questions provide a purpose for the information search. Protecting him from inappropriate content is really a subset of the the general process of filtering information to find out what you want to know. Mediating the is showing kids how searching for information is a way to answer the questions important to us. So this exercise isn't just about earthquakes, but also about learning to learn. So great!

  • My biggest "thing" watching this vid is how "hung up" he was on that it was deadly, it could kill you. Most earthquakes don't kill anyone! I am not sure I would appreciate that my (theoretical) 7-year-old came away from a lesson so hung up on something that can kill him/her.

I am all for how you went and looked with him to find out more about stuff. He shares the learning with you. That's cool!
