dear cavaliers..may I make a statement; until you have heard the 1933 recording
of Der Rosen: you should not commit to commitment. Ask any critic your life would
open up to the most wonderfully trained voices. Lotte Lehmann, Eliz Schumann.
M.Olszewska,R. Mayer,..Vienna State under R. Heger, this is so far superior to
any post recordings...it's rare ask Glenmed.

What a cast: Sena Jurinac (!), Rothenberger, Schwarzkopf with Herbert conducting the Vienna boys (no girls in those days). WHAT 'staging' of this trio. This must be the just about the best on record of that particular scene. Sublime does not cover it.

Schwarzkopf is THE Marschallin, even according to Spanish Diva Victoria de los Angeles, who told me herself when I asked her why she never sang die Marschallin. I saw Schwarzkopf Met debut Rosenkavalier - well, first in history! people in the balconies tore up programs and threw it down as confetti, gentlemen running to the stage and offering their rings and me .... high up in the back of balcony, wiping my tears, shouting BRAVO! Her finesse?ES acts like a classy Marschallin and sings like angel

This really is the best Rosenkavalier. Sena Jurinac is magnificent. Edelman is a wonderful Ochs. Rothenberger's a beautiful Sophie. And Schwarzkopf is really the best as the Marschallin. It's entirely wrong to think of her as cold: there are layers and layers of subtlety of portrayal here, but there's deep feeling at every layer. Erich Kunz is a splendid Faninal. And there is something about the way the Vienna Phil do Viennese that nobody else can match.
