Performed at Marysville Pilchuck High School multicultural assembly.

Description of dance:
The Spanish occupation in the 16th century brought a new influence in the Filipino culture. This is also the period wherein European dances were introduced and popularized especially among the urban Filipinos. These dances of European influence were name in honor of the legendary Maria Clara, the main female character of Philippines national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere. Maria Clara is a symbol of the virtues and nobility of the Filipina woman.

The Maria Clara dance to be performed by Janelle and Kevin is called Polka Sa plaza. Wearing their lovely Maria Clara gown, the young Filipinas with their partners in their traditional barongs gladly parade from the church yard to the town's plaza. This dance exemplify the graceful movements of the lovely Filipina.
