The Kingdom of Nepal, the last Hindu monarchy in the world, existed from 1768 to 2008. Prithvi Narayan Shah, Prince of Gorkha, unified the country and became the first King of Nepal. In 1923 peace was made between Nepal and British India. In the 1990's civil war broke out as radical communists started a revolution. The country was further destabilized by a massacre of the royal family in 2001. The last King of Nepal, Gyanendra, tried to maintain order and put down the Maoist rebels but factionalism succeeded in undermining these efforts allowing the Maoists to gain the upper hand. In 2008 the monarchy was formally abolished.
