NYPD Cop Punches Protester at Occupy Wall Street, 10/14/11

Journalist and Reason contributor Michael Tracey is covering New York's Occupy Wall Street as it's happening. Above is footage he shot as the protesters marched through the street of Manhattan and had various stand-offs with the New York Police Department. Tracey himself reports being punched in the shoulder while filming.

In the above video, around the 1.40 mark, a white-shirted NYPD officer decks a protester in a green shirt (how the incident started is unclear). Reason.tv's Meredith Bragg edited the video above from about 20 minutes of footage.

If anybody doesn't like what this movement stands for, then that's fine; you don't have to agree. But for those who say that the OWS protestors shouldn't have been protesting at all, let me remind you that this country was founded on the right to protest. These protestors were exercising that right PEACEFULLY. The police brutality was unprovoked and unnecessary. If you're a true patriot, you would support the OWS protestor's right to protest even if you don't support the movement itself.

I'm not part of any of the occupy movements, but I've noticed a disturbing and ignorant hatred of protesters. May I remind you all that the United states was built on protest. Protest is written into our laws and our soul by the blood of patriots who gave their lives for causes they truly believed in.

So nice that the occupy movement died. Tons of people with nothing better to do clogging up the city accomplishing nothing. I really feel sorry for the cops who had to deal with these people day in day out. They never should have let them camp out.

Should the police have treated them the way they did? It's hard to say, but after hours of people being a pain and saying fuck you pig, well it's hard to have restraint.

Occupy a shower stall and a job.
