I use CRTs for photo editing, their graphics quality exceeds all but the most expensive of more modern monitors and they can be had super cheap. The real draw to flat panel monitors is in their compact design that takes up a lot less space. They've never had any thing on CRTs as far as picture quality.

I like it when adults remember how to play like children. Apparently CRT monitors carry quite the charge - could be where the smoke was coming from.

Mmmmmmm.....I love the smell of mercury and lead!
I'm willing to bet there was a point and time when that CRT monitor cost $400 (I can tell it's one of the better ones because of it's flat screen vs the old ass concave ones). Let this be a lesson to everyone don't spend an excessive amount of cash for electronics b/c the next day you'll literally be throwing it out the window. That why I refuse to purchase an LCD anytime soon. Prices will continue to drop, they always do.

Just cause you don't know how to refurbish it doesn't mean you should destroy it. It probably had a blown capacitor or bad mosfet. Other than that everything in that monitor was probably good. Not any more though. What a waste.
