The Ethiopian Communist Party was the best and brightest in the country. The Red Terror was directed against the leading members of the ECP by thug Haile Mengitsu. While this does highlight the irony of revolution, it does little to excuse or justify the mirror-image White Terror typical of such situations. Hope the point wasn't lost on the filmmakers.
