This video was made for our english final. Its based on the book, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. Instead of just taking the book and showing the same stories, we revised it into a reality show where we examine the real lives of mothers and daughters.

Enjoy.

P.S. we made it so that it kind of reflects the Korean society- since we're all koreans

Jing-Mei & Suyuan (DeeDee)
In the Book: Jing-Mei was renown for her talent in playing the piano when she was young. She would practice with no end, again and again on her mother's demand. Towards the end, Jing-Mei finally confronts her mother and stops playing the piano. Jing-Mei's mother, Suyuan felt that her daughter must be a genius like other children.

"I'm not going to play anymore. Why should I? I'm not a genius."
"Only two kind of daughters. Those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind! Only one daughter can live in this house. Obedient daughter!"

In the Movie: She has a talent in arts, and her mom makes sure everyone knows it. Her mom would brag about her everyday to everyone. She eventually gets sick and tired of her mom' behaviour and decides to quit. Meanwhile, her mom will still not stop boasting about how much good fortune she has to have a daughter with such skill like her.

Rose & An-Mei (Kristie)
In the Book: Rose is in a situation where she ends up getting a divorce from her husband Ted. In the book, the story goes more in depth with the story of Rose and Ted, but also shows evident clashes between her mother because of this issue. Rose feels extremely confused and unsure about what to do- especially since her mother never really accepted Ted as her boyfriend, or husband.

"I don't think we should talk about Ted now, not here" - Rose
"Why can you talk about this with a psyche-atricks and not with mother?" - An- Mei
" A mother is best. A mother knows what is inside you. A phyche-atricks will only make you hulihudu, make you see heimongmong" - An-Mei

In the Movie: Rosa is the girl who broke up with her boyfriend. She does not go to her mom to talk about it because she thinks that her mom wont understand her. However, her mom thinks that she will know what is best for Rosa and is furious of the idea of a psychiatrist, let alone the idea that her daughter is going to a psychiatrist to talk about her problems to someone who does even know her.

Waverly & Lindo (Susan)
In the Book: Waverly started playing chess a girl- and was treated as a genius. She would go to tournaments and bring back medals. However, she hated her mother showing off about her and taking all her credit, leading her to eventually quit chess. Waverly is more independent, and self-centered and does things her way.

In the Movie: Waverly is the girl who gets pressured by her mom to be the prom queen. Although she gets it every year, she is also annoyed by her mom's constant bickering about how she HAS to be prom queen. Her mom in the other hand is very proud of her daughter and only wants her to be prom queen because of her jealousy towards Jing-Mei (Dee Dee), a successful artist.

Lena & Ying-Ying (Jenn)
In the Book: Lena's husband constantly insists dividing EVERYTHING perfectly in half. They would make a list of things they have bought with their money, and split it according to who bought what. Lena feels uncomfortable about this idea, but never has the courage to speak out. One day, when her mother comes over to her house, Lena's mother sees 'icecream' on Lena's list and becomes confused since Lena hates icecream. The story behind this is because when Lena was young, she believes that she killed a boy by the way she looked at him. Lena comes back home eating a whole jar of icecream to forget her instance- eventually causing her to abhor icecream.

"Lena can not eat icecream"
"So it seems. She's always on a diet"
"No, she never eat it. She doesn't like"
"I guess I assumed you were just trying to lose weight....Oh well"

In the Movie: Lena is the girl who does not tell her boyfriend about how she doesn't drink coffee. Lena does not feel the need to tell her boyfriend about it because she doesn't feel comfortable talking about her insecure past- although it IS the past. Meanwhile, Lena's mother just doesn't understand why Lena won't tell her boyfriend about it. This shows cultural difference and barriers between how the mom and the daughter thinks differently.
