This is a pretty good documentary by the british Discovery Channel about the beginnings of computer games. It covers the early 70s with the rise of Atari right up to the big crash of the videogame market in the 80s. From that point on, it becomes pretty one-sided by only covering Miyamoto (the inventor of Mario and Zelda) and Nintendo. Anyway, it's still an excellent documentary thanks to its accurate way of dealing with historical facts.

  • @IRONMAIDENFAN2006: What about it is "missleading"? I clearly wrote what to expect: information about Atari and Nintendo. Consoles, by the way, ARE computers. Your distinct connotation of computer games and video games wasn't made in the time this documentary covers. Also, the name of the documentary is the story of "Computer Games" and changing a given title is out of the question. Oh and if you forgot, Tetris - which is also covered - started out on a computer...

  • thx for upload this dokumention. it was very interesting.

  • PC Engine, Neo Geo, the 1985-1992 Golden Era of arcades - all not there. But that said, interesting on what it 'did' cover.

  • it miss a few things , doesnt say the excact time line and most of all doesnt cover the "console war I & II " , its a prewar doc

  • @MrChilledOwt Do what your username suggests, please. Thank you.

  • guess they kinda forgot sega..

  • @MalpaPL In Australia we shape shapes

  • IN SOVIET RUSSIA SHAPES SHAPE YOU

  • I hate how British narrators are never able to correctly pronouciate Japanese. I mean seriously they put a lot of work into this, why not just say it correctly-.- ticks me off

  • my guess the reason they stopped at the gameboy was because by the 90's the gaming industry really started to become complicated with nec and especially sega being thrown into the mix as well as the flood of pc games that were introduced from then on. it was still interesting to see how the industry shaped up until that point though. i never knew that activision was born from ex atari employees and that the father of atari was practically ousted from the company due to indifference.

  • most of this documentary was very good but the final portion which involved the story of tetris is told in much more detail which was produced by the bbc which was also posted on youtube by mr gamedocumentaries (sorry, dont know what else to call you, :P). but as i said, the majority of this was very educational and i learned quite a bit about the origins of atari and activision. activision still being around today, it was interesting to see how they got their start. thanks for uploading this.

  • I have one question about these video game pioneers, why aren't they more talked about? I mean a lot of the video games people enjoy wouldn't be around without them. I guess it goes under the say that a lot of modern stuff could apply under, "People know about the inventions, yet they don't know about the inventor."
