Ever wanted to play a Nintendo 64 game in 1080p? It's actually been possible for quite some time, now.

Using emulators - Project 64, for instance - Nintendo 64 ROMs can be run in a wide aspect ratio, and at higher resolutions without any stretching at all. Some other neat settings include anti-aliasing (AA) up to 8x and anistropic filtering (AF) up to 16x. And because the games are run through an emulator directly on to a monitor or TV at the screen's full resolution, they look fantastic, with a crystal clear image.

While the crystal clear image really isn't after the compression applied to the video source, here you can still clearly see the wide, high resolution image and how it affects games.

N64:

Resolution: 480i
AA: N/A
AF: N/A
Aspect Ratio: 4:3

Emulator:

Resolution: 1080p +
AA: 8x
AF: 16x
Aspect Ratio: 4:3, 16:9, 16:10...

  • is it just me or do i see that it lags pretty much..

  • Ocarina of Time runs at 17FPS. It's just more obvious on a bigger, digital video.

  • How do you put Project64 in to widescreen what plugin do you use?

  • No plugin, it seems to be a default option in the game. Simply go to:

Options --> Configure Graphics Plugin... ---> Change fullscreen resolution to a wide one --> 'Adjust' tab --> Check 'Adjust game aspect ratio to match yours'.

After this, go fullscreen, and it should either fill your screen or be wide, depending on the setting.

  • You can even change windowed resolution to a wide one also.

  • Cool, I haven't noticed that option :D

  • Why do people think that the higher resolution a game is run at the better it will look? The game has really low texture resolution and model detail, and increasing the resolution only reveals that. It doesn't show you any more because there isn't more to show.

  • @DarCowAlways No, you lag. I'm on a 55inches digital display, that's 'bigger' and there's no lag whatsoever. Here you lag big time.

  • back in the day...

  • and this is the reason why some screenshot of n64 Zelda:Ocarina look better than even the 3DS version.

  • @JacobNiemann and the 64DD

  • This is master quest, it only came out for gamecube and 3DS

  • I totally can't find the options for this...

  • I don't know why, but when I turn on the AA and AF, and switch into fullscreen, the game runs fine, untill I switch back out, the screen freezes, but my computer still runs normally, just with the screen frozen.

  • @DarCowAlways How do you that put a video tutorial please

  • Maybe I just haven't played OoT in forever, but the music seems... Off...
