Resisting big budget films will save you costs and retain a level of simplicity and authenticity, but that can also keep you from being exposed to larger audiences. You have to have a balance, I suppose. Western audiences already have preconceived notions about Ethiopia that will never be broken unless they get to see it on the big screen. .

I have seen all of his films and I had the pleasure of interviewing him and his lovely wife, Shirikiana Aina, who is also a wonderful filmmaker. After viewing Gerima's films, I began looking at film in a more exciting way. His films are not yet available in common venues but you may google his distribution company, Sankofa, to locate them. You will want to watch them again and again.
